Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino says "every game matters" for the team, insisting they are not prioritising one competition over the other.

The Gunners are still fighting on four fronts this season after a 4-1 win over Portsmouth on Sunday secured them a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

They are also sitting top of both the Premier League and Champions League tables, while they face London rivals Chelsea on Wednesday in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

"It doesn't matter if it's the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup or a friendly," Merino said.

"It's not only about the competition we're playing for, it's that we're playing for the badge, we are playing for our reputation. Every game that we wear this shirt, we have to do our best, we have to win and we have to put in a good performance.

"The main thing is to show that we are Arsenal and we are ready to compete every single time. The rest will take care of itself."

Mikel Arteta's side survived a brief scare on Sunday, with Portsmouth taking an early lead, but once again it was their prowess at set-pieces that turned it around.

It has been a discussion point throughout this campaign, and asked about the importance of set-pieces for the team, Merino said: "It doesn't change. It's always the same mentality and same hard work every training session.

"We practise every game. We go with the same attitude, but obviously sometimes the ball goes in and sometimes it doesn't. We let you guys talk about it. But, to be honest, it's our standards, our basics, our principles.

"We try to apply them, and [against Portsmouth] we were lucky. It showed that the good work we do has some good results."
