Milan are facing the unwelcome prospect of Ismael Bennacer returning to Milanello at the end of the season as his move to Croatia hits a significant stumbling block.
According to Daniele Longo, the Rossoneri management was hopeful that Dinamo Zagreb would exercise their option to make the midfielder’s move permanent. However, that scenario is now in serious doubt. The financial aspect was already a major hurdle, as the Croatian side found it difficult to afford the Algerian’s substantial wages without external assistance or a significant discount.
The situation has been further complicated by a recent physical setback. Bennacer has picked up an injury that has sidelined him for several weeks, preventing him from finding the rhythm and consistency needed to convince Dinamo to commit to a long-term investment.
With the redemption deal now appearing unlikely, Milan are bracing for the possibility of the 28-year-old returning to the squad in the summer. His return would present a headache for the club, who had intended to use his permanent departure to free up space on the wage bill and reinvest in the midfield market.
