Dundee United say it is "a fluid situation" as they prepare to battle heavy rainfall in the hope of avoiding a postponement of Wednesday's Scottish Premiership fixture against Aberdeen.

United's Scottish Cup last-16 tie against Spartans was called off on Friday because of a waterlogged pitch.

The top-flight club say Wednesday's league game would go ahead if it was being played 24 hours earlier.

But they warn: "The local weather forecast indicates further significant rainfall over the next 24 hours.

"While there is currently no plan for a pitch inspection, this remains a fluid situation and may change depending on weather conditions."

Aberdeen's own cup meeting with Motherwell at Pittodrie on Saturday evening was also called off, as was their league meeting with Celtic last Wednesday.

"The weather across northeast Scotland has seen unprecedented levels of rainfall throughout the recent winter months," United say.

"This, combined with a congested home fixture schedule and the club's commitment to doing everything possible to fulfil fixtures, has placed significant strain on the pitch.

"A range of pitch-protection measures have taken place during this period. These actions have been crucial in enabling fixtures to proceed during prolonged periods of heavy rainfall.

"However, they have had an unavoidable impact on the visual appearance of the playing surface.

"This has been the necessary compromise in ensuring continuity across an exceptionally demanding run of home fixtures during extraordinary weather conditions."

United stress that staff have worked "extensively to improve conditions and prepare the pitch for upcoming matches" since the cup postponement.

"As of 1pm today, the pitch is deemed playable and, were a fixture to take place this evening, there would be little concern regarding its playability," they add.
