Christopher Scott has been an Antwerp player since 2022. The former German youth international has scored just four goals in that time, and provided one assist. While many, myself included, felt that Scott’s time in Belgium would be coming to an end last summer, he has suddenly shown that patience can be a virtue. Of Scott’s four goals, three of them have come this season, as well as his single assist. Scott has gone from a bit part player off the bench to starting games, and perhaps Antwerp are now going to get to finally see the player they thought they were signing from Bayern Munich.
The 23-year-old Scott played just two senior games for Bayern Munich before making the move to Belgium, with most of his appearances coming for the sides second team. He had scored seven goals in 24 games in the Regionaliga before joining Antwerp. After 30 appearances in his first season, Scott was sent out on loan to Hannover. He struggled to make an impact in Bundesliga 2 and looked like his time at Antwerp wouldn’t amount to much. Last season he played 18 games, with most of these appearances coming off the bench.
However, Scott is out of contract this summer, and perhaps that was weighing on his mind as well as the clubs. Antwerp are having to cut costs, which could open up even more opportunities for Scott next season. His reintegration into the side this season has come largely because of departures and the sides inability to replace them. However, he looks a much better player than he did during his first three seasons with Antwerp.
There is still certainly room for improvement for Scott. Antwerp would like to see him create more and provide some more goals, especially given how reliant they have been on former Tottenham striker Vincent Janssen over the past few seasons.
Scott and Antwerp face Anderlecht on Thursday in the second leg of their cup semi-final. A win could see them back in the final for the third time in four years. Scott already has one cup final victory to his name, and for Antwerp a cup win would certainly rescue what has been a poor season so far.
