Liverpool and Newcastle reliably produce enthralling affairs, and this game was no disappointment. Unfortunately for Newcastle, they just as consistently fail to win at Anfield, and on that front, too, they kept with tradition.

The visitors had the best of the early territory, winning more corners (seven) than they have in the opening 30 minutes of a Premier League game since November 2014 (vs Queens Park Rangers). Harvey Barnes also struck the post from a free-kick, meaning only Manchester United (17) have hit the woodwork more times in the Premier League this season than Newcastle (14).

Virgil van Dijk was required to make a handful of last-ditch interventions, and there were a couple of balls across the face of goal that didn’t quite find their target.

Liverpool’s threat, meanwhile, was minimal. Mohamed Salah, inexplicably ineffective in recent weeks, wasted a golden chance when clean through on goal, chased down by Kieran Trippier, a 35-year-old who has never been known for his pace. The home side created little of note early on.

And it was Newcastle who took the lead. Anthony Gordon, who was sent off in the reverse fixture, fired in a low effort beyond the reach of Alisson in the Liverpool goal to score from open play in the Premier League for the first time since January 2025 (vs Wolves), ending a run of 33 games.

Newcastle were good value for their lead. They could have been forgiven at that point for daring to dream that this might finally be the day their run of 29 Premier League games away to Liverpool without a win came to an end.

But those dreams were dashed in no time at all.

Just four minutes and 50 seconds after Gordon’s goal, Liverpool were level. And two minutes and 18 seconds later, they’d gone in front.

Both goals were scored by Hugo Ekitiké, the centre-forward whom Newcastle were reportedly interested in buying in the summer. Since the Frenchman’s Liverpool debut in August, only Erling Haaland (31) has been involved in more goals in all competitions for a Premier League side than him (19 – 15 goals, 4 assists).

The first was set up by Florian Wirtz, meaning he and Ekitiké have combined for six goals in all competitions this season, more than any other pair of players for a Premier League club. The second was an extraordinary individual effort that very few players could score, as he ghosted past his marker and poked the ball into the far corner of the net.

One player who could, once upon a time, certainly have scored such a goal is Salah. He struggled here, though, and remained goalless, yet he still managed to break not one, but two noteworthy records.

He set up Wirtz for Liverpool’s third of the night to put the result beyond doubt. That meant the Egyptian had 10 goals and 10 assists against Newcastle, making him the first player in Premier League history to record double figures for both goals and assists against a single opponent.

It also took him to 107 goals and 45 assists at Anfield, taking him past Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford and Thierry Henry at Highbury (both 151) for the most goal involvements at a specific venue in Premier League history.

Centre-back Ibrahima Konaté, who lost his father earlier this month, added a fourth late on, sparking emotional celebrations in front of the Kop.

Liverpool saw out victory to move into the top five, just one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea. It hasn’t been the most memorable campaign at Anfield, but with results and performances like this one, Liverpool still have every chance of making something of this season.
