Leo Walta believes he can bring his spectacular goalscoring form to the Championship after swapping the Swedish top flight for Swansea City.

Walta joined Swansea from Allsvenskan club Sirius on transfer deadline day.

And while the Finland midfielder accepts he must "adapt quickly" to the English second tier, Walta is convinced he will score goals for his new club.

"I think so," the 22-year-old said when asked if he can replicate his form in front of goal in south Wales.

"It's something that I've been practising my whole life so I hope I'm able to bring it also in Swansea."

Walta was signed on an initial loan deal, though the expectation is that his move will be made permanent come July.

At the back end of the mid-season transfer window, head coach Vitor Matos targeted an attacking midfielder capable of making a difference in the final third and Swansea struck a deal with Sirius.

Walta had caught the eye by scoring 17 goals during the 2025 season in Sweden.

"I was happy I was able to score that many goals and it's always been one of my skills, good shots and passes," Walta said.

Sirius' season ended in November, with the club back in pre-season and preparing for the 2026 campaign when Walta said his farewells.

He made his Swansea debut as a substitute in last Sunday's comprehensive win over Sheffield Wednesday having not played since the November international break, when he made two appearances for Finland.

Walta is used to change, having left HJK Helsinki – in his homeland – for Norwegian club Nordsjaelland as a teenager.

He then had spells with Danish club HB Koge and Swedish side Mjallby before joining Sirius in 2024.

While he expects English football to be more "higher tempo and physical" than anything he has experienced before, Walta is undaunted.

"The Championship is a league that I have followed all my life because it's shown on the TV in Finland, so I think I know quite a lot about it," he added.

"I am really excited."

Walta's 19-minute cameo against the Owls was not his first appearance on these shores.

In September 2024, he made another substitute appearance in Finland's 2-0 defeat by England at Wembley in the Nations League.

That was one of 10 caps so far for Walta, who describes former Finland team-mate Teemu Pukki – who retired from international duty in November – as a role model.

Striker Pukki, 35, spent five successful years in English football with Norwich City, scoring 89 goals for Swansea's Championship rivals.

"How he did in this league and also in the Premier League was special," Walta said.

"He's such a nice guy as well outside the pitch. He even congratulated me for the move here, so that's nice."

The new flying Finn?

Another former Finland player who enjoyed some good times in Britain is Shefki Kuqi, the striker who played for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace.

Until last week, Kuqi was the only Finnish player in Swansea's history, having spent a year in Wales after he was signed by Paulo Sousa in 2010.

Walta is old enough to remember Kuqi playing for Swansea, but knows all about his countryman's trademark goal celebration, the sprawling dive which saw him become known as the 'Flying Finn'.

"I was a bit too young, but I've seen the celebrations that he had here," Walta says.

And will he give it a try? "Possibly," he adds with a smile.
