It "seems ridiculous" to bring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back as Manchester United interim manager when they need someone to "galvanise" them, says former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy.
Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim on Monday, United look set to appoint a caretaker manager until the end of the season, with ex-boss Solskjaer and former player Michael Carrick the front-runners.
It would be a familiar position for Solskjaer with the Norwegian appointed in similar circumstances in 2018, before being given the role permanently in March 2019 following a successful run of results.
However, despite leading the club to the Europa League final, he was then sacked in November 2021 after a poor run of form.
"The Solskjaer coming back one is crazy," said Murphy on BBC Match of the Day. "Manchester United paid him to leave because he ultimately failed and then they're going to pay him to come back?
"It seems ridiculous when you have got options like Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher is a decent coach and then you have got someone like [Roy] Keane, who the fans would love to see come back.
"OK, some might think that could be chaotic, but he is a leader. They need someone to galvanise everybody. I'm not sure Solskjaer is the man to do that.
"It's a big transition now for United, again."
