The €100m divide: Galatasaray and Fenerbahce market value disparity hits landmark figure

©TM/IMAGO
The rivalry between the two biggest clubs in Türkiye, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, is unquestionably one of the fiercest in the world. The hatred between the two Istanbul giants is almost unparalleled with only the Glasgow derby – Celtic/ Rangers – and the Buenos Aires rivalry – Boca Juniors/ River Plate – coming close. Unlike many manufactured rivalries in the English Premier League, there are no half-and-half scarves or post-match embraces in the Intercontinental derby.

The fixture was suspended due to crowd trouble last season with José Mourinho famously calling for a foreign referee to officiate the fixture. Galatasaray, however, have claimed the bragging rights across recent times, winning the Süper Lig title in the previous three seasons and Fenerbahce haven’t been crowned champions since 2014. But it’s not just on the pitch that Galatasaray are the dominant force as they’ve now reached a landmark advantage over their rivals based on Transfermarkt’s famed market values.
The market value disparity between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce
After the January transfer window, Galatasaray’s current squad became the most valuable in the history of Turkish football at €337 million. There were no major permanent additions at Gala but Noa Lang (€15m), Sacha Boey (€12m) and Yáser Asprilla(€12m) all arrived on-loan with notable market values. Conversely, Fenerbahce lost two of their most valuable players in Jhon Durán(€32m) and Youssef En-Neyri (€22m). And as a result, Galatasaray’s squad is now valued €100m higher than their arch rivals, which is the biggest gap in history!
The figures will all change in the Süper Lig market value update on March 5th but Lara Karacan, International content manager and Turkish football expert, has explained the disparity. “Fenerbahçe parted ways with their two strikers who previously held the highest market values in the squad in the winter transfer window,” said Karacan. “Galatasaray, on the other hand, have not lost any key high-value players and have further strengthened their squad with additions such as Noa Lang, Sacha Boey and Asprilla, who carry comparatively higher market values.”
